Abstract

Computational model for spontaneous fragmentation of coal particle due to thermal and volatilization is developed. Coal particle in a detonation tube is subjected to high temperature shock. Shock is generated at one end of tube with help of plasma cartridge. Convective and radiative heat transfer is considered at coal particle surface. Numerical code is developed to obtain temperature and validated with analytical solutions, while both stresses due to thermal and volatilization being subsequently computed. Fracture occurred when the resultant stress exceeded the ultimate stress of coal. Fracture temperature, location and time are predicted with use of Maximum Principal Stress theory.
