Abstract

Smart Homes, alias for the Automated Home, brings practical value by enabling greater convenience, comfort, safety, security and reduces operating costs. The residents can control many aspects of the home from anywhere at an time such as lighting, home appliances and entertainment by using home networking. This paper will briefly survey the various types of home networking technologies (either the wired or wireless technologies such as power line, phone line, Ultra Wide Band (UWB), and spread spectrum (SS)). The paper will critically analyse these techniques showing their advantages and shortcomings as well as how to use them to implement and control the different house appliances.
