Regions’ efficiency and spatial disparities in Tunisia

Author(s) : LAMIA MOKADDEM

Abstract

In post-revolution Tunisia, promoting balanced regional development represents one of the main objectives in the development program of the government. Therefore, economic efficiency is an essential condition to reduce region inequality. The purpose of this article is to investigate regional efficiency and spatial dependence in Tunisia. We propose a two-stage approach, which involves: in the first place, applying data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the evaluation of efficiency across Tunisian delegations in the year 2010, the year preceding the Tunisian revolution; and, in the second place, using spatial statistical techniques and spatial logistic regression to estimate the impact of spatial dependence on efficiency results. The findings show the regions ‘efficiency is driven by structure and spatial factors. JEL Classification: R11, R15, O18,
